RESERVA AMAZÓNICA is an ecological
lodge in a Rain Forest environment and climate providing
an authentic experience in a natural setting. Visitors
should be aware of Friajes or Cold Fronts which drop temperature
down to 10°C (50°F).
To arrive at RESERVA AMAZÓNICA is to arrive to
another world. It sits smack on the river bank amid a
40-square-mile private ecological reserve owned by INKATERRA.
Located in the heart of the Amazon Rain Forest, adjacent
to the Tambopata national park, the lodge was opened in
1975 and since then performs innovative sustainable use
of the Amazon Rainforest: scientific based tourism since
1978.
The wildlife is remarkable, from giant and colorful macaws,
to toucans, parrots, tapirs, tamarin monkeys, owls, the
gorgeous Southern Amazon Red Squirrels, as well as a large
variety of monkeys. RESERVA AMAZÓNICA has the world
record of ant species in a single place (362 species),
according to Professor E.O. Wilson (Harvard University).
RESERVA AMAZÓNICA provides the best tourism infrastructure
available in the entire region, and is a prime location
for exploring the rainforest. The lodge boasts 30 private
cabanas and 3 suites built with local materials in native
style. Service areas are located in a two-story wooden
pavilion with a cathedral ceiling housing the dining room,
bar, the main lounge and a mezzanine overlooking the rainforest,
where visitors can relax while contemplating the unique
scenery.
Programs are designed so guests can be
in contact with nature. Activities may include a trip to
Monkey Island (Rolin), an
excursion to Lake Sandoval, guided walks within the private
reserve, a visit to an indigenous community, a visit to
ACEER, and various other activities.
In 2004, Reserva Amazónica will
begin working in close cooperation with ACEER (The
Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research),
sponsored by National Geographic Society on a property
close to Reserva Amazónica. This site is an educational
and research center which will be equipped with the latest
generation technology, located next to the Tambopata National
Reserve.
The Tambopata rainforest holds world
records in biodiversity. Reserva Amazónica has more than
200 species of native
plants with different curative properties. Visitors
may observe more than 500 species of native birds. Professor
E.O. Wilson
of Harvard University has recorded 362 species and
68
genera of ants in Reserva Amazónica, the highest number
ever
recorded worldwide in a single location.
RESERVA AMAZONICA lodge is within a
private ecological reserve and research center of 10,000
hectares (24,710 acres). While offering spacious facilities
and well-equipped private cabins, the lodge guarantees
guests an authentic, safe and comfortable stay in the
rainforest, combining cozy accommodations with warm hospitality,
a dedication to conservation and the opportunity to discover
magnificent naturally camouflaged wildlife in the jungle.
ACCOMODATIONS
Rooms are palm thatched-roofs, wooden and rustic, built
in the Amazon's traditional Ese-Eja and Machiguenga styles.
Each room is attractively furnished with log chairs, comfortable
beds shrouded by mosquito netting and a small porch with
two hammocks. The cabanas have no electricity, adding
to the charm and authenticity. After dinner, guests return
to their cabanas across tree-trunk-boardwalks to find
lit candles and kerosene lamps lighting the entry and
bathroom.
AMAZONICA SUITES
Three of the cabanas rate as "suites" and have
a more luxurious bedroom with two double beds. Also following
indigenous architectural traditions, suites are more spacious
and feature large bathroom showers with solar heated filtered
water, a walk-in closet, large windows and a spacious
terrace with two hammocks.
STANDARD CABANAS
RESERVA AMAZONICA features 30 double private cabanas built
following the traditional style of the native Machiguenga
and Ese-Eja people. Each bungalow is raised on stilts
and has a steeply pitched, thatched palm roof, a terrace
with two hammocks, a single bedroom with large windows,
mosquito nets and a private bathroom with filtered water.
AMAZON PAVILION
The heart of the lodge is the central pavilion, a circular,
two-story lounge and dining room. Both practical and beautiful,
the Amazon Pavilion features rustic furniture built from
local wood by native craftspeople. The upstairs loggias,
with large balconies overlooking the Madre de Dios River
and the surrounding forest, are ideal for afternoon tea
or a pre-dinner Pisco Sour cocktail. Hammocks and large
sofas, next to large windows with fiber glass screening,
complete the relaxing atmosphere.
The Amazon Pavilion serves as the lodge's Dining Room.
Delicious meals -reflecting Amazonian cuisine - are served
in the pavilion by the lodge's friendly staff. Included
in the lodging options, the meal plan consits opf typical
dishes, such as juane (chicken with steamed rice cooked
in banana leaves), ají de castaña (Brazilian
nut purée) or paca (fish or chicken cooked inside
fresh bamboo stalks set in a circle around a bonfire),
as well as pitchers of refreshing drinks made with boiled
water and flavored with naturally exotic local fresh fruits.
Bottled water and a large variety of cold bottled drinks
are available at the bar for an additional charge. The
main pavilion is the only hall in the lodge with electric
lighting.
